Doris Troy - Just One Look - my proper introduction to soul music.

Soul music had eluded me for most of my youth.

I heard a lot of the Motown staples such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, when I was younger, but I was absorbed by what my friends were listening to, what I saw on MTV and what I heard on the radio.

In college, I was swept by the British alternative wave of the 1980s, followed by Britpop in the 1990s.  There were so many bands I adored that my music-listening time was filled with the sounds of Blur, Oasis, The Smiths, Suede and others, that my musical plate was full.

In 2007, I purchased a record and 45 RPM collection in Chicago.  As I dug through thousands of 45s, one record in particular stood out to me.  It was Doris Troy's Just One Look, released in 1963 on Atlantic Records.  After just a few notes, I was hooked.

I've been asked how do you go from listening to 80s/90s British indie to 60s/70s soul?  The two compliment each other quite well.
